We want to be remarkable. We want to be worthy of attention.
For this to happen we need to create something so meaningful and striking in our lives that others feel compelled to remark about it.
Friends and family comment on our unique hobby, coworkers are jealous of our living situation, or strangers are impressed with our capabilities. These comments are the essence of being remarkable.
We all crave a sense of mastery and excellence that others notice and appreciate, however, we rarely progress past the point of average.
Most of us feel stuck and learn to live with the fact that we don’t have the time or flexibility to reach the level of expertise we crave.
Avoiding Average
The trap of chasing a remarkable life is a lack of focus.
In an effort to be the best we can be and deliver incredible results, we spread ourselves too thin and try to be the best at everything.
We say yes when we shouldn’t and try to please those around us. We confuse activity and busyness with meaningful outcomes and before we know it we’re so busy with the mundane that we don’t have time or energy for the remarkable.
Instead of a focused commitment to something meaningful and worthwhile, we’re weighed down by everyday obligations that produce nothing more than average results.
Remarkable results require remarkable effort.
Committed Focus
To be remarkable in the truest sense of the word requires commitment and focus.
If we’re not focused, we won’t be able to allocate enough time or effort to achieve the results required and if we’re not committed, our brains will question our focus and effort.
To reach this level of commitment we need to be completely confident we’re committing our focus to worthwhile pursuits.
If we doubt ourselves we’ll revert back to the standard scattered busyness of everyday life.
Identifying these worthwhile pursuits requires carefully investigating what is important to us and what kind of lives we want to create for ourselves.
It will take time and we’ll need to learn to say no to many things that feel important, but with a committed focus on a handful of worthwhile pursuits, we can accomplish remarkable results.
